Rappresenta l'esordio di Coltrane al sax soprano ma non solo. A pochi mesi da
"Giant Steps", cambia la formazione e riscrive alcuni brani della tradizione
americana, minimalizzando i temi per dilatarli e rimpastarli nell'ampio tessuto
ritmico-armonico disegnato da McCoy Tyner (piano), Steve Davis (basso) e Elvin
Jones (batteria). Il brano d'apertura è My Favourite Things, un waltz dalla
melodia garbata che vede nel lungo ed estenuante assolo il suo stravolgimento.
Guidato dalla sapiente e ariosa azione sul "ride" di Jones e dalle continue
progressioni armoniche del piano, il sassofonista esplora a fondo l'estensione
del suo strumento regalandoci vertiginose frasi dal vago sapore orientale.
Sconvolgenti sono anche i cambiamenti apportati in termini di interpretazione a
Summertime. Coltrane, imbracciando questa volta il tenore, da vita ad una
rilettura tutt'altro che romantica. Guidato da un tempo veloce aggredisce il
tema che, fedele melodicamente all'originale, assume connotati aspri e inconsueti che si risolvono anche qui in un'ampia e visionaria improvvisazione.
